Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency Approves Contract with Friedman Recycling to Expand the Processing and Marketing of Santa Fe’s Recyclable Materials

On July 16th the Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency Joint Powers Board approved the Agency to enter into a contract with Friedman Recycling of Albuquerque to process and market the recycling currently consolidated at the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station (BuRRT).

Based on the information provided by the December 2014 Solid Waste Assessment and Management Study, it was recommended that the Agency consider entering a Public Private Partnership to process and market the recycling produced within the community. This contract represents the first step that was necessary to help the City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County continue to evaluate moving to automated single stream recycling programs which are under consideration. “We are very excited by the prospects provided by this contract with Friedman Recycling,” said Joint Powers Board Chairman Councilor Joseph Maestas, “It ensures that the necessary steps for Santa Fe to expand our diversion programs will start off from a strong base.”

The ultimate goal of this contract is to make sure that the Agency is operating the recycling program efficiently and effectively. The initial contract will result in a savings for the Agency of approximately $200,000. In addition, the contract is designed to share the value of our recycling through a revenue share mechanism with Friedman. The Agency and Friedman will establish a profile of the Santa Fe recycling stream and evaluate it every six months. Based on this profile a ‘per ton’ value will be established monthly, which will be our “Average Market Value”. Friedman will then receive a base rate of $50 for each ton of material delivered to Albuquerque. The base rate will be subtracted from the Average Market Value and the difference will then be split between the Agency and Friedman. This will allow both parties to take advantage of strong markets, and the funding received will be used to support community recycling efforts. In addition to the financial incentive, Agency staff worked diligently expand the type of recyclable materials allow in recycling bins and at drop-off centers.

Residents will now be able to place the following materials into their mixed recycling bin at the curb in the City and all of the County drop-off containers:

  • All plastic containers including water bottles, milk jugs, laundry soap containers, clamshells, yogurt containers and other plastic packaging materials
  • All paper products, including brown paper bags, cereal boxes, paperboard and books
  • All corrugated cardboard. Please no wax coated cardboard
  • All steel / tin containers
  • All aluminum containers and foil products
  • All milk / juice cartons and drink packaging

Please do NOT put the following in your mixed recycling bin:

  • Glass bottles and jars (continue to place these in your ‘Glass Only’ bin or drop-off container)
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic bags
  • Garden hoses
  • Garbage
  • Toys, buckets, laundry baskets
